Raelan inventor/mage 11/10/2008 4:18:31 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | Just Floating An ordinary appearing Spacehawk floats out in the nameless abyss somewhere in between systems. Inside the cargo bay Raelan sits performing some maintainance on his cybernetic arm. The interface system at this stage still isn't quite right the nerve impulses get to the hand, and go to the machine, but if the movement isn't quite perfect the computer doesn't understand and disregards the command.... "The key is to create an adaptive system..." he says to himself "all similar commands must be grouped into a category, instead of looking for jut particular commands..." Easier said than done. he pulls out the porticomp (portable computer) and begins to rework the code, his eventual goal is to connect to the ship directly turn it into his body temporarily, almost like possession or astral projection, but more reliable. If he ever manages that, his magic should be more viable in space scale conflict, but that would take a lot of special materials, and one heck of an enchanted ship. he makes some more notes on the handwritten blueprints for his eventual ship, the many erase marks prove that this is a very rough draft. Many other blueprints, equipment, and materials lay scattered across the cargo bay and crew quarters, in fact at this point only one of the beds is usable, which is fine, because he is alone at this point in time. he reaches over and grabs a set of blueprints marked for his hand to ship interface device, making some marks in both the mechanical and magical sections. What he is really waiting for is a job, He has already sent out a notice on the job boards he could find, and the comm. system in the cockpit is turned up enough that if he got a communique he would hear the incoming noise, the cockpit is already modified with one of the two copies of his interface device, even with its current flaws he still likes it better than the conventional controls. He keeps two so that he can keep one attached while he modifies the other. Which is what he starts onto now. |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/12/2008 12:00:32 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: In the Cargo Bay He attaches the porticomp to the device, uploading the new data and then starts the simulator program. Then he hooks the cybernetic hand into the device, flying the simulated ship, trying out different move commands, and nerve twitches, after half a minute he begins typing with his left hand, he'd never learned proper typing, but he is a rather fast hunt and peck typer, modifying some of the programming codes to fix small bugs, and smooth out the piloting. It is nearing completion, more fine tuning and one should be able to perform even delicate landings with it, but it still isn't perfect, he needs to perfect it to move to the next stage. Eventually he unhooks his hand , the device and closes the simulator, unhooking the porticomp. He flexes the metallic fingers, ensuring they had movement again, the device intercepts the commands going to the hand and uses them for the ship instead, it was a nasty surprise one time when the commands stayed stopped and his hand wouldn't move. You can color the cybernetics to look just like the normal body part, but to him there was a certain art to the metal, it seems a shame to cover it up. |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/13/2008 12:27:34 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: In the Cargo Bay He clears away all the random things on the table, placing them on various beds, shelves and corners, in some random form of organized chaos. Once the table was cleared of all but the device, and its blueprint he slides them over to one side of the table. He then sits on the other side, and gets into the typical meditation cross legged pose, for no other reason than it is comfortable. He exhales slowly, reading the notes again as he drifts into relaxed concentration. When he finishes reading he takes a deep breath, and exhales slowly, putting out energy in a sphere around him, shaping its makeup in a certain way, and expanding the invisible sphere until it encompasses the table. He settles it there as a 'temporary enchantment,' much like the one he is using on the prototype devices, meaning it will stay in place, but it is removable, and will dissipate slowly, more quickly than the enchantments on the devices because it is not tied to anything, but it will last long enough. as soon as it was inside the aurasphere the device, and for that matter his hand as well, begin to glow in odd patters of color. Magic being invisible ordinarily this aura can be used to see what you are doing, which is very helpful for delicate tasks. He planned one day to make a workshop with this 'spell' permanently enchanted into the walls, making any magic inside visible. His wings and tail, definitely a reptilian design, showed in a ghostly white radiance, swirling with overtones of red, and green. (and they just were that when he saw them first, which is why he calls his style the dragon) Tendrils of green reach out from him, and claw at certain parts of the glow on the device and all the colors bleed out and evaporate through those places, making the device normal again, another disadvantage of temporary enchantments. He then reaches out his hands putting them close to the device, and exhales slowly again as greens and yellows and reds drift from his hands laying over the device, and working into it in a complicated pattern, sometimes he changes the placement of the wires of color, shifting one, twisting another, then he settles in each layer with lashes of purple to control the lot before starting another layer deeper into the metal. At the deepest layer he uses mostly orange and blue, connection and communication, and lashes it all down with purple again, but incomplete, leaving weak points in the enchantment. His wings pale as more and more energy goes becoming rather transparent by the end. he takes a sharp intake of breath and shakes himself out of his trance. In this case he is using magic as a short cut to what could be done mechanically, and if he ever ends up selling a good quantity of these he'd be using the strictly mechanical version. Deciding to let the aura fade on its own, he glanced at the crystal on his left arm he never was sure if they glowed under this spell, it seems foggier, but he has a wonderful imagination, and easily delude himself, hence why he double checks everything. One thing he doesn't imagine, and what confuses him the most is the crystal's effect. With the quartz crystal, it is an amplifier of sorts, he tunes himself to its vibration level, and it thins out his energy, like adding carbon to iron, making steel, you use less iron to greater effect. But with these crystals he can't tune himself to them, he's tried, and it seems too.... alien, his body just isn't made to be able to copy that. However if he channels energy into it it changes the energy to its vibration and gives it back, making the energy more effective at the crystal's specialty, in his left hand's case protection... It almost felt like he was borrowing and using someone else's energy (which he had done before, with or without the people knowing it, all life seems to have some magic energy. Sometimes he'd taken their energy just to calm them down, as it seems that people (himself included) burn this energy like sugar, being hyper uses more, and so on. |

Or leave a message in the black market, it'll come on here as a message.) |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/14/2008 10:03:19 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: In the Cargo Bay after staring at the crystal on his arm in thought for awhile, he pulls himself out of his reverie and shrugs. Someday, he'd have to get a hold of a bigger crystal, especially if he ever gets his plans up for his ship, with the proper integration, it would become his body in a sense, and he could use its energy, electronics produce energy as well, but it's much harder to use, so he'd have to see about a special kind of generator.... but that is all in the future, now he has to test out his changes. He runs the device through simulation again, and decides it's definitely smoother, at which point he heads into the cockpit, switching out the two models, and uploading new piloting programs into the computer. (there will be a better opportunity for any space faring contact next post) |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/15/2008 10:20:40 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Just Floating as the programming switchover finishes he remembers to turn down the volume on his com system, that would have hurt if it had gone off right then... and sits down in the pilot's seat, simulations are one thing, but actually flying is so much better. He always feels a connection to the vehicle, even when using conventional controls, like he sort of becomes it, but with the ship responding to the flick of his wrist, and movement of his fingers, it is even closer. he connects his hand to the piloting device, and the system initiates, he starts getting ghost feelings from his hand, sensory data, that isn't quite filtered out, feeling space is kind of fun, but nowhere near adequate, he'll perfect the filters later. Given the commands the engines flare from idle, maneuvering thrusters firing recklessly at his command. He isn't too far from the Mircor system, and had never been there so he decides to check it out, moving his 'fingers' into a not so natural position (to prevent accidental activation) he selects destination, and fires his hyperdrive. Eventually he exits, somewhat close to one of the planets, and resumes flitting around like a drunken butterfly in space, ordinary controls can't reverse, or change direction this rapidly. He thinks smugly, and begins paging through the information on Mircor's planets, dress styles, the particular 'what not to say' for the different cultures. I wonder if any of them have an opening for a good magic show, my magic detection aurasphere can make those particularly fun, among other things. Despite being Kiefan he acts a lot like a human, instead of idly drifting through life he is always rushing around. Possibly due to the fact that he has already almost died multiple times, and possibly also due to the fact that he left Kiefan influence at such a young age. |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/17/2008 3:57:45 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Just Floating The ship emerges from hyperspace a small ways from Cerania and takes a wildly changing high orbit while he studies the informaion. As he scans through the system's planets he shakes his head, he would go to Cerania, likely he could make some good money there, unfortuantely his prototypes aren't ready for that kind of stress yet, but once they are, that place would be prime for winning bets and making sales. He smiles at the thought, he isn't too rich, and never has been, but he's always wanted to make his own company, maybe Dragon Shadow Creations, or Productions, He'd have to see what names are open in the copyright registry. Such things are annoying but necessary if you don't want people (blatantly at least) stealing your ideas. Eventually he wanted to make his own ship designs, he has multiple blueprints for different kids of ships in among his stacks, of course for any of his advanced piloting designs you would need some sort of cybernetic gear, the most advanced of which, would be a system designed specifically for piloting the ship, it would attach to the head, or the spine (depending on how thorough you wanted your connection) and would absorb all but your automatic, critical function commands, (heart, lungs digestive system etc). Nerves are tricky, but in his cybernetic work he's had to learn all about them. He resumes flipping through the planet information, Com, Temcom, and Crocop, were only of marginal interest, though he idly wondered at the properties of Com's gasses, and if they'd have any use to him, magically or mechanically. Liavor held some interest, he is always curious about those crystals, though the ones he has right now are big enough for his personal magic, He is likely to want bigger ones later. But that is all in the future, for now he continues to try out new and crazy maneuvers (whether or not they work), and waits for his hyperdrive to cool down. The idle thought of running salvage down onto the planet crosses his mind, with all the failed flyers (and failed pilots) there's got to be some interesting components down there spread across all those mazes, but he's sure there are many salvage companies on the planet searching for stuff like that for resale value, and with more specialized equipment than he's got. |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/19/2008 6:59:19 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Just Floating he idly continues paging through systems, Charlu, he's never been there, he pages through a couple descriptions, until his eyes freeze on Micc. Magical technology! This he had to see, maybe they had components that would spark an idea, or better yet, help his current designs along. He begins plotting his jump courses as he pulls himself out of a dive, and gets a safe distance from the planet, hyperdrive warm... and executes his first jump. Eventually exiting somewhere out in between systems |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/20/2008 8:26:28 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Just Floating His computer triangulates his coordinates using the surrounding stars, as he flits about, waiting for the hyperdrive to cool. He begins making notes on the porticomp with his left hand, about existing bugs, and suggestions to continue fine tuning the interface. |
Raelan inventor/mage 11/21/2008 7:49:29 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Just Floating After a few more repeats of that he arrives in Micc territorial space, and his computer gets IFF pinged, being that he's piloting a transport class the automated query comes, asking if he is business or personal. He selects personal, and the system sends him a list of spaceports, likely waiting times, and their geographic locations, he selects one, the auto pilot engages, and he heads into the back to meditate. He wants to be at full energy for this excursion, and is already getting antsy, so calming down isn't a bad idea either. |
