RE: Space Station FREYA

Kapitein Piet pulled out his pipe and started packing it, as he mulled over the possibilities.

"Well, 'tis a bit tricky. I'd suggest we go fer it, since we don't have much choice. We'd plot a course via checkpoints here and here to make use of the gravity wells," indicating on the map, "and then continue a bit under the ecliptic and back up to Grayson's station there. Seems like a good run."

He looked over to Freya. "How fast does this bucket run? Think we can make it?"

RE: Space Station FREYA

Freya disregarded Piet's friendly dig.  The old shipboard idioms were just too ingrained for him to stop using them now; he knew very well her engine's parameters.  But she calculated the route he suggested and answered, "I can get us there in just under four days.  The closest pass to the pirates' territory will be just before we reach Grayson.  Mr. Piet, you and Froderick put out a call on a narrow-beam to let them know we're coming.  We might need their backup if we run into trouble."

In the meantime, Freya set her mind to making sure her new drive systems were intact after the somewhat jarring jump.  She also let herself relax a little. An odd side-effect of the decentralization of her mental faculties, she periodically needed to collect and integrate herself to correct for approximations in the redundancy heuristics.

Froderick activated the transmitter.

"Hello, hello! This is Froderick. We'll be coming in from rel-vec Zero-Five-Nine comma Epsilon comma Zero-Three-Five. Transport grossing 40 kay. Blank UID. Repeat, blank UID. Be advised, we might be tailed by pirates. ID sequence follows."

He pushed a button, triggering a circuit in Freya that transmitted a unique hashed key to Grayson Territories, and leaned back in his chair.

RE: Space Station FREYA

"Well done, Froderick. We'll soon arrive in Grayson Territories. When we get there, we'll need your help repairing the super-luminal drive. It's up to you if you stay on board or choose another path. I'm sure Freya has something to offer, but you have to make the decision for yourself, and nobody else."

Kapitein Piet spoke with conviction and concern. He valued his friend's skill and strength, but he was no longer captain and felt part of the crew. As such, he worried that Froderick might not be cut out for life as an outlaw.

Froderick seemed so full of potential, but his needs came first, for better or for worse. Kapitein wondered about Froderick's decision.

RE: Space Station FREYA

The sub-light engines were roaring fiercely in the background. The solid foundations engineered by Freya and Froderick conducted their reverberations into the entirety of the frame, and the fluids within it. Air, tenuous as it was at room temperature, conducted only a small fraction of the available energy. For Froderick and Piet, the sound was loud but not deafening.

"Well, let's first focus on making it that far. This ship is still unproven, as much as I trust Freya in her simulations. "

He stood awhile, thinking.

"Freya is a very special entity. It goes beyond that - I think she's unique in the entire galaxy. We owe it to her - to the situation - to make her the best she can be, and I have an idea."

"Oh? I'm listening, mate," Piet responded.

"In a locked datafile in a secret repository at home, I have a copy of a very rare document. A doctor Pearson has plans for a gravity wave generator, which has implications for us ranging from hyperspace drives to weaponry to the transfer of information itself!"
He paused, and continued, "I understand that punishing the wicked and all that sort of business is important to you, but let us first equip ourselves for the tasks that lie ahead."

"I'm glad we understand each other," Piet said. He looked Froderick in the eye, and glanced into one of Freya's glassy lenses, and continued, "Some things are left undone. I'm not the captain, and Freya is wise and will listen to what you have to say. We need equipment as much as we need crew, that's for sure. For all our sakes, I hope you know what you're talking about. Let's see about it once we get through this asteroid field."

RE: Space Station FREYA

Freya was occupied with the complicated manoeuvre. An miscalculated burn just a second too early or late could send her smashing into an asteroid or moon, or barreling into outer space, weeks away from getting the required parts.

Secondary circuits were processing the conversation between Froderick and Piet. Things were definitely turning interesting.

"It concerns a device, which is able to affect the space-time continuum in such a way as to emit gravity waves at surprisingly high energies. For example, it can negate the gravity well of a nearby moon, to aid in hyper-space jumps. It could also be used as a weapon, to tear asunder ships using the irresistible force of gravity, or as a means to slow down time. The possibilities are tremendous, if it exists and if we can comprehend the physics behind it."

Freya processed this silently, focused on her tasks and waiting for a good time to discuss future plans.

A few days later, they approached the sector of asteroid-dotted space under the administration of Grayson Territories.

RE: Space Station FREYA

A little after entry into Grayson claimed space a comm signal came bouncing through the asteroids from the general direction of the colony. Jara's voice comes over the waves.

"Freya do you read me? This is Orchid, Jara, one of our listening posts went crazy and I figure the only thing crazy enough to navigate an asteroid field at that size has to be you. Though I must compliment Froderick, your maneuverability is greatly improved."

"I've been on alert since we got your message, no pirate activity at the moment but they've been raiding frequently which is why I was delayed in reaching you, I also have a nice little surprise for you. Over"

RE: Space Station FREYA

Freya nudged herself around another lump of space-rocks before responding, "If I had known that this belt was so incredibly dense, I'd have thought twice about it and gone out of the ecliptic.  I think I can manage, as long as I concentrate.  Our ETA to your position is a little over six hours.  But, um, where do I park?"

The real danger of the field wasn't running into an asteroid much larger than herself, as these moved slowly and were few and far between, but rather the multitude of smaller bits of nickel and iron that came from all directions. Despite running the ion-cannons hot with melting them to slag, Freya's hull was marked by a number of solid hits.  Needless to say, her hoped-for "rest" was still some time in coming.

The talk that passed between Froderick and Piet was flattering, but she worried about this gravity manipulation technology.  Stuff that altered space-time itself tended to bring with it risks — hyperdrive technology itself was won at the cost of two entire moon-bases and countless research vessels.

RE: Space Station FREYA

Belladonna's nav computer, and sensors were coordinating with the listening posts to give her a rough map of the field along with freya's location itself, Freya wasn't necessarily picking the best paths because it couldn't see them.

"No difficulties there Freya, the actual colony is an asteroid pulled into a mostly static position outside the asteroid belt. They encircle it with a few asteroids with particularly good materials for ease of access and protection, but You'll have plenty of space."

"I'm coming to you, once I get close enough I can grant you access to the listening posts and give you a map of the field, that'll make your job easier."
