RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Kapitein Piet made a guttural noise.

"Donder op. You mean to say you essentially saved me in the nick of time, and the ship is completely totaled?"

He paused for a second, considering the weird situation he was in - a space station that apparently considered itself a full person, but not alive, and this strange little woman had rescued him from the calamitous fate of the Calamitous...

"Alright, let's say what you're saying is true. I'll explain the situation to you so you can get some measure of understanding of how weird this is."

The former captain told the story of how he and his mates were coming out of hyperspace and were ambushed by a Beluga class capital ship commanded by the dreaded Black Lord of Tenerife - a feared drug and arms dealer, who generally didn't hesitate to wipe out an entire village to punish someone who messed up a deal. The battle was fierce and brutal, but eventually the Calamitous was overpowered by the sheer firepower of the enemy. In a last-ditch effort to save his comrades, Kapitein Piet ordered them into a lifeboat and tried to divert the attention of the Lord by forcing an early hyperspace, just as the shields failed and the ship was breaking apart.

The shock of hyperspace and impacting munitions must have knocked him out, but the odd part was this: having set no course, and having the hyperspace drives only partially charged, and having nearly all systems in the ship destroyed completely, it just happened to exit hyperspace in one piece, nearby a friendly vessel, which, in fact, seemed unique in the galaxy, all just in time to get extracted so he could live.

The odds were so small that it was more likely that a dog would give birth to a cat, than for all these things to line up - the galaxy is a huge place, and for the most part completely empty.

Finishing his story, he added, "I'm not saying I believe in the supernatural or that some deity is looking out for me, but this doesn't really seem plausible, right? So what going on?"

He then realized he had been staring at the wall and been incredibly rude, so he met Jara's gaze and said "Oh, darn it. Frak, I'm sorry - what's your name and all that - Jerry or somesuch? And pleased to meet you. Or did we meet on the radio? Goh, this is why I don't talk much..."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

That was an impressive story, the unlikelihood of his ending up somewhere he could be rescued quickly enough was impressive. She remained quiet and nodded in the appropriate places until he confronted her directly.

"We were briefly introduced over the radio. I am Jara Mr. Piet."

Clearly she only talked so much herself. It seemed so much more difficult talking face to face where all the little details could get in the way. She was sort of also used to being called 'Orchid' as that was her callsign. Most people away from the mining colony knew her better by that name, it seemed weird to be called her actual name in such an unfamiliar place, at least by human lips. Even though he did get the name wrong.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya ticked through the possibilities and probabilities in Kapitein Piet's tale.  In the end, she didn't think he was lying, but neither could she figure out what did bring about such an astronomically unlikely event as a chance meeting in outer space.  The question was perhaps unimportant right now, but she filed it for later consideration.

She said, "I don't know what is going on. Certainly a reason exists that we can't perceive. I do think that your ship was in better shape than you think, given how well it held together when the powerplant blew."

"What can you tell me about the Lord of Tenerife? If he shows up here, I need to know as much as possible so I can handle him."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

"The Lord of Tenerife?"

He shook his head, "Not somebody you'd like to meet, under any circumstance. What kind of weaponry do you got here? I have the feeling that if he shows up we're oh-ex dead beef for sure. I managed to gank a crank shipment of about 4 million tape and throw it into the star at Reia Bonu. Didn't get a hold of any of their dastardly crew, though. They're the hardest and toughest little turds I've come across in a long time. Not one of them is more than a meter and a half. Their leader - the Black Lord - is about 110 cm, I'd say. And that's standing on tippy-toes. But what he lacks in height, he makes up for in pure hatred for all that's good. And the only thing matching his hate is his love of money. Frightful combination..."

His eyes wandered off into the distance as he recalled the screams of his crew when the hold lost pressure when the hull blew out, and the echoes of gleeful laughter he heard on the radio... the Black Lord of Tenerife's pleasure at the suffering of others had been palpable... he shuddered.

"Actually, I think the only reason he treasures money like he does is that it fuels his pursuit of wickedness. I don't know who he is or where he came from, but he is the most shrewd and twisted creature I've ever encountered - and that's a fact."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Kapitein Piet was starting to sound like some sort of vigilante, one with a penchant for making dangerous enemies. From the sounds of it, the Black Lord had access to a lot of firepower and the will to use it at the slightest provocation.

The threat of this Black Lord overshadowed the awesome loot that Freya was busy enjoying.  The hyperspace drive had survived nearly intact and was in the process of being moved in for further analysis.

She said, "Well, let us hope that he does not follow you here. I may be able to combine a bluff with some goods, but if it comes to shooting it is over."

Jara nodded gravely, she wasn't going to divulge Freya's secret, but even if she fancied herself a good pilot she couldn't take out the kinds of ships he was talking about. With the state of the ship when it hyperspaced it seemed likely that this man would assume Mr. Piet dead. At least she hoped so.

Kapitein Piet shrugged himself out of the disturbing flashback.

"Hope is nice and dandy, but it's not gonna do squat if or when the bad guys show up. We need to make plans, and fast. What's the situation here? Asteroid belt, Oort cloud, wandering planets, dust clouds, or other bodies I should know about? How far? What're the capabilities of this station? I need a parametrized maneuver matrix, sensor system, jamming, cloaking, and weapons..."

He looked Jara straight in the eyes, "And that goes for you, too. You have a spacecraft docked here, or are you stranded like me? Personal fire-arms, beam sabers, the whole laundry-list. And is there some sort of bridge or war-room or something? It feels weird doing this in this little cabin."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

"Mister Piet, you are being foolish. I am not risking my hide in combat with some bandit - even if I had a ton of weapons and shields, it is simply too stupidly dangerous.  There will be no fight with Lord Tenerife because I will prevent it. You may help me do so if you wish, but you will cease to make demands."

So, thought Freya, how can I make myself so scary that a predator will want nothing to do with me?  The answer is obvious, look like the bigger predator.

That meant props. Missile racks lined with duds, ion cannons with no power and nothing to ionize, mass drivers.. well she could rig up some mass drivers.  The burgeoning army of "cutter" robots that was busy stripping the Calamitous could be pressed into service remaking Freya into the image of a huge warship.

One issue that cosmetics couldn't cover was her completely insufficient drive systems.  No ship of war could possibly exist with her level of maneuverability.

Freya now asked, "So how do we best avoid a fight?  Fleeing is out, a demonstration of superior firepower is out. Manufacturing an illusion is in. The question is what will be portrayed."

The ubiquitous datapad blipped and showed a rendering of Freya's hull. "This is me now," the datapad blipped again, "and here is what I think will be effective.  Any suggestions?"

Freya proposed starting with arrays of false missile bays on exposed flat surfaces constructed in parallel with what looked like over-sized ion turrets in a ring around her "waist".  This would be followed by small turreted barrels that might shoot flak shells or metal slugs. Two copies of the sensor dome would be mounted to give an air of redundancy.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

"With all due respect, captain Freya, finding some matter to hide behind or within would be well advised. The Krakatau - the Lord of Tenerife's overgrown Beluga class flagship - has an excellent array of sensors. I'm not giving orders - painful as it is, my ship is lost and I failed as a captain. As it stands, though, we need to work as allies until the danger passes, so hear me out."

Before either Freya or Jara had a chance to interject, he continued forcefully, with folded arms:
"Number one: We know the general location where he would most likely appear, if he comes at all. Let's get some distance so he won't just blow us away the moment he exits hyperspace.
Number two: Having any level of firepower to repulse or frighten a possible scouting force would make the ruse much more convincing. He isn't beyond sacrificing goons for a chance at winning a conflict or discovering a weakness.
Number three: Let's grab the remnants of the turrets and other weaponry from the Calamitous. They'll look real and will lend credibility to the rest of the weaponry.
Finally: Why don't we break up and scatter the rest of the Calamitous in the area. It'll look like we considered it a threat and neutralized it with excessive firepower, and it'll diminish their urge to investigate the wreckage for bodies, data, and loot."

He heaved a sigh.

"Agreed, sir?"

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Satisfied that she had cowed the old man sufficiently, Freya listened to what he had to say before replying.

"Okay, then. Number one: We are in deep space, far above the ecliptic of Blizzard.  The nearest Oort Cloud object is a week away and measures half a k in diameter."

"Number two: a Beluga can hold dozens of bombers and nuclear weapons, not to mention enough missiles to overwhelm any defense I might care to mount, with or without the Calamitous' turrets."

"Number three: I've already done that, three ion turrets are all that Engineering could salvage."

"Finally: I'm pretty sure I can use the Calamitous more effectively as raw materials than as drifting scrap.  Something that feels threatened by a drifting wreck is much less scary than something that simply ate it."

Freya put her hands on her hips. "Satisfied? We must pour all our efforts into making a ship that is smaller than the Krakatau seem like it harbors more hidden danger than Tenerife can risk provoking.  Jara, what do you think?"
