Stasis Hey Claudius... You killed my father. Big mistake. Dominion Master 12/10/2008 11:17:13 PM Level: 25 Experience: 65000 Total Posts: 691 | RE: December! Oddly enough, big replicators are... ...still made of the same parts! |

Nu-uh! Unless you use a bunch of tiny parts (like cells or "nanobots") you're wrong! Except for that everything is made of atoms, but that's not what you meant. For example, a big replicator could contain a Tokamak fusion reactor and small one could definitely not. Definitely different parts! Are you guys aware of the attempts toward producing the first artificial Von Neumann machine? The RepRap project, for example, can already make most of its own mechanical parts and work on making its own circuit boards is in a late stage. One problem is that every new self-replicating ability must in turn also be replicated, so there is an exponential increase in complexity. Life is a molecular Von Neumann machine, developed by evolution. A robotic replicator (without "nanobots") would work completely differently, more akin to a factory that builds factory parts and has mobile elements to put the parts together. So, all you who are Dominion Masters, would it be alright if I made up such a "character" in Daireem's outer space regions? It would be passive, as a space-station should be, kind of like GirlGenius' Castle Heterodyne's fragmented mind combined with the hive intelligence of an ant colony. |

IMO, they're easily the coolest thing in Stargate. Those human-form ones seem a bit derivative of T-1000... except with nanobots instead of "memetic poly-alloy". For completeness, let me just say two more things on the subject of intelligent replicating machines: Cybertron, Unicron. What's not to love? |

When Robert Patrick sticks his hand in your head, you die. When human form Replicators do it, it just hurts a lot and they look at your brain! As for your second paragraph: Other than Unicron mercilessly devouring your world, nothing! |

I knew what you meant, but Replicators are little puzzle peices with magnets and minds, (oversimplification Jack style) you're talking a full fledged robot with all its complicated parts, not impossible, but difficult. And it will take some factory conditions to start such a project, but once it gets going it's not implausible. the hive mind makes the programming part less complicated, you'd then have to program minimal mind, and just give it a radio instead,as long as your 'queen' has the capacity to control them all, but then I guess if it's good enough to make them, it can always add more memory to itself ^-^ after a little too much modification it can get sorta grotesque though... (illithid (mind flayer) ovemind style) |
