Blasters are the next evolution of firearms, capable of adjustable
firepower without changing loads, extremely high capacity, and very
low recoil in a small weapon. Most blasters fire bolts of superheated stranigen gas, contained in an energy field to retain the bolt's shape; these types of blasters are now known as gas blasters. However, many newer blaster rifles (a misnomer, as no part of a blaster is rifled,) mostly new designs by Perrenor TechSystems, have come to use a jolt of electricity through a jonsil, a Liavorian crystal very similar to the robulus, which responds with its own burst of energy. By carefully controlling the amount of electricity run through the crystal, and directing it through a series of magnifiers, it fires a very bright, colorful beam. This type of weapon is known as a crystal blaster. Like robulus, jonsil can be exhausted and become permanently inert. However, unlike robulus, it is possible to recharge a jonsil crystal by very careful manipulation of ultraviolet radiation in a sealed environment. Charging devices have been made available for an ever-decreasing price. Gas blasters and crystal blasters each have their pros and cons. Gas bolts rarely exceed 1,900 feet per second, with muzzle velocity lying somewhere between 1,700 and 1,900, making bolt drop a major issue at ranges higher than 500 yards. However, the punch they pack at shorter ranges is great, with the ability to penetrate level IIIA body armor and still punch into a human torso. Entering a solid object is usually enough to rapidly dissipate the cohesion field, releasing the gas into open air. Over-penetration is almost never a problem with a gas bolt... even if you want it to be. |
