RE: Space Station FREYA

Freya turned off the mic and asked Piet, "You know this man?  Does he have the skills we need?"

She noted that Hertzmann seemed to think that Piet was captain, and that Piet didn't correct him.  It wasn't clear to her whether this was important, but since Piet had been so subdued since Jara left she decided to let it slide.  Hertzmann would probably have heard from Jara that there was no human captain on board...

[response to comment below: well, kapitein does mean captain. I can see how it'd be his nickname after a lifetime of captaincy, but it's an odd/ill-fitting name for a non-captain, don't you think?  Like calling a man Eagle-eye despite him being blind.  We can play this out. Freya hasn't been calling him Kapitein and thinks it's his title.  Piet apparently still identifies as Kapitein despite his lost ship & crew & mojo. Could be interesting character development...]

RE: Space Station FREYA

[Actually, Kapitein's just his name, not his title. Piet referred to himself as an officer, and Hertzmann is considering him as such. If that's unclear, I can maybe fix it?]

"He's a good man, Freya. Sterker nog, I think he'll be an asset to our crew."

Kapitein Piet straightened his back. It cracked.
"My recommendation as officer is to try to recruit him long-term, if he does well installing the subspace drive. What's the plan?"

"The plan, number one, is to do exactly what you suggested."

Freya opened up the comm and spoke directly, "This is Freya speaking. A friend of Piet is a friend of mine. Come on in, I think you'll like what you'll find. We'll vector to match the transmitted intercept parameters."

With Freya's thrust added to the delta-vee, it'd only take eight hours for the engineer to reach the airlocks.  She also transmitted the specs and schematics she'd been able to glean from the damaged hyperdrive.

Station Freya doesn't seem to waste any time! It'll certainly be interesting to work on it with Piet. Man, hard to think about Piet without thinking he's a captain.  He flippin' exuded pure captaincy when the tugboats maneuvered the Calamitous into the maintenance dock.

The times... they are a'changin'.

RE: Space Station FREYA

Roughly eight hours later, docking time.  Froderick and Piet woke from a brief sleep while Freya used her cutter-bots build a human-habitable work area at her center of mass where the damaged hyperdrive had been placed.  Before turning in, Froderick had been able to get a fairly good picture of the engine and the structural design of Freya.

Being progressively self-built, the design had no overarching logic and could have trouble withstanding the stresses and radiation of hyperspace travel.  Ordinarily it would take some time for Froderick to come up with an analysis of such a complex vessel, but Freya's self-awareness and computational resources would make it much easier. The engineer also thought it'd be more interesting, almost like a doctor working on a patient.

Freya took over the tiny shuttle's controls and put it right in the larger airlock.  With a long hiss, the dock repressurized.  Freya's android stepped out and said, "Welcome, Engineer Froderick. Nice to meet you."

"Thank you! Nice to meet you too. I'll tell ya - it sure is nice to stretch my legs in some gravity. That little transport box feels like a coffin after a few days."

Froderick turned to see somebody else enter the room.

"Kapitein Piet! Good to see ya. Jara told me about what happened. Very heavy. We'll get them back one day. I've been preparing some things with the data Freya sent, so let's get to work."

"Aye, good, good. As captain Freya told you, we desperately need the subspace drive installed and operational and we need to improve her transverse, lateral, and rotational maneuverability. Defense, weaponry, and all the rest comes after. Now let's see what ye got fer us.

RE: Space Station FREYA

Piet really stressed the word captain.  Was that aimed at Froderick or her, Freya wondered.  No matter, it seemed like seeing his old acquaintance and having a shot at building up a crew made Piet more satisfied with his lot. Whatever he meant, it seemed good.

Freya looked at Froderick to hear his thoughts.  She'd kept a few ideas from Piet, unsure of what the consequences of radical structural redesign would be.  Unless Froderick suggested something similar on his own, she'd file the designs away for much later consideration.

RE: Space Station FREYA

Catching Piet's hint, Froderick turned to the android face of Freya and, strange though it was, quickly adjusted to the idea that it (her?) was Kapitein Piet's superior.

"Righty-o. I'm sure you're aware of the structural requirements for the subspace drive mount and surrounding hull framework: the vibrations generated by the drive must be able to propagate effectively throughout the ship for a clean jump. Any parts out of sync will experience some lag and temporal torsion, which can be dangerous."

He cleared his throat.

"Now, I propose we do something similar to what I did to the Calamitous, which is to exceed the nominal subconductivity by perhaps 500%. What's not documented in any books I've read is that this enables emergency jumps even with a cool or lukewarm subspace core."

The unspoken implication was, of course, that Froderick's intervention in the Calamitous was what had enabled Kapitein Piet's narrow escape. He had, in fact, saved the old pirate's life.

"Next on the agenda, which we also need to consider while making the resonance calculations for the foundation, is moving the conventional thrusters away from the main axis, and adding vectoring nozzles on supporting flanges here, here, and here," indicating points on a diagram.

"That'll let us maneouvre asteroid fields, cluttered satellite rings, and dumb-fire minefields."

He looked at his two compatriots, and asked, "well, what do you think?"

RE: Space Station FREYA

Kapitein Piet bit his tongue. Who would have thought that it would be so very difficult not to make decisions? Serving as a subordinate was not a piece of cake with somebody else around, but he tried to adjust as well as possible.

”All things in their good time,” right? Nobody is perfect.
Even better, “Time is the justice that examines all offenders.”

I’m doin’ alright fer a shipwrecked captain. Just need to let these good folks do what they do best, and I’ll wait and see where the winds carry me.
