RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(^-^)

Raelan put on a bit of a smile, he'd built up plenty of energy to do this, and oddly despite his disinclination to getting attention, he enjoyed showing off. That coupled with the fact that he actually did want these people's respect and up until now had done nothing but act stupid....

"There are two kinds of crystals, shield crystals, and blaster crystals. My shield crystal broke, so I'll have to demonstrate with hostile spells."

"First, a classic of fairytale mages and not commonly used, I'll show you a lightning bolt, my way." He looked forward and picked out a rock farther away from his audience than himself and picked up another. He pointed at the far rock, and both begin to slowly glow brighter as he manipulated electrons into one, and away from the other.

"I'm doing this slowly, for the demo, and because I'm still not fully in shape from last night.... but now's about the time you want to cover your ears. This will be a real lightning bolt....." As they did he threw the rock, then covered his own ears and let go of the spell. A literal lightning bolt lanced to the rock on the ground as the electrons sought the easiest escape, with the subsequent crack of thunder, and all the usual lightning damage to the rock.

"Simple physics. I like to actually hit my targets with the rock if I can to minimize difficulties." he said fighting off a bit of light dazzle from the bolt. "Now a different but similar effect from the crystal's energy. you won't need to cover your ears."

He generated a ball of energy into his right hand, mostly the aggressive red, and then it streamed into, and through his right forearm like a filter, coming back out an odd dingy yellow-brown. He then reached out toward the rock, and the strange energy flowed up his fingers, twisting and coiling itself until it launched itself from his fingers at the remains of the first rock, and a bluish plasma-like sort of energy sprang from his fingers and intertwined into a coiled lance which burned into the rock and superheated the core, making it shatter.

He fed a little bit of energy through the crystal again, and pooled it into his right hand in case Lao-Tsu wanted a look. And turned to fix his audience with his wry smile.

"Any other common use spells or classic fairytale spells you want me to ruin?"

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(Neat! Sorry for the long delay with the posting. Responsibilities, real life, etc etc)

Lao-tzu observed the demonstration intently with all his senses. He felt the faint pull of electric charges, saw the bright flash of dielectric breakdown, and smelled the raw odor of ionized air. The more arcane faculties noted that whatever magical training Raelan lacked, he tried making up for with an understanding of science.

When Lao-tzu wanted to make a lightning bolt, he didn't bother building up a charge by pushing electrons around.  He would simply summon a bolt of lightning, with is actually much easier.

The effect of the blaster crystal was all the more interesting and subtle.  Here, the difference between science and magic was thin, almost non-existent. Lao-tzu decided he would have to ponder what he observed before he could make sense of it.

He said, "That was wonderful, Raelan. Especially the trick with the blaster crystal.  I think I must have another look at these crystals some time.  Now, to reciprocate, I will show you an example of the living magic that I mentioned earlier."

The old wizard walked over to a spot on the ground where the earth was thin and plants were struggling.  Crouching down, he said, "The most important element of terrestrial life is the living soil."

With a look of serene concentration, Lao-tzu conjured waves of colors, each smoothly folding into the next until a complex form took shape.  This form flowed into the ground, altering its essence.  Yet another form was brought into being, this one altered the substance of the ground.  Finally, a magical weave was laid over it all that seemed to make it more firm and real.  When it was all over, the loose and sandy soil had been replaced by a rich loam that positively screamed for plants and bugs to move in.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(Hmmm - isn't referring to Earth a no-no? I'd try something like "life on planets", "life on land", or just "life" or "all life".)

Holy ukulele! These nutters are serious mothers!

Starcey watched with mixed emotions as the show progressed - the video-game antics of Raelan both repelled and attracted her. The attraction was the power he wielded; the repulsion was caused by a short lifetime of shunning magic, fear of the unknown, and a vicious denial of its appeal. She realized, however, that this could actually be something she might grow to respect, and be willing to learn - now she had finally met some people prepared to treat her as an equal. Lao-Tzu had asked for her opinion, and they had all listened. No playing games, no tricks, no drama - just understanding and reason. This was wildly unfamiliar to her, but something she could get used to.

Raelan's magic was what she had seen before - power that was arbitrary in its purpose and application, but unflinchingly effective.

Lao-Tzu's spell, on the other hand, was entirely enchanting. She felt enriched by having the fortune to see it, and felt tears welling in her eyes without shame.

So this is what my mother was talking about...

Temporarily forgetting the disturbing way Dante referred to his work, or perhaps believing she could somehow stomach his ways more easily after the first two mages, she turned to him and asked, "Do you have skills in magic you can show?"

Dante had a slight pain in his head when Raelan began to use his magic. He stayed silent and clapped one the lightening went off. "Bravo!" he told Raelan "What about a fireball? or perhaps magic missle" he asked seriously. His stomach tightened when Starcey asked him if he had any magic of his own. "Yes...yes I do. It's not perfectly controlled though" he shrugged "I don't know, I suppose I could..."

he smiled and stepped aside granting Dante the center stage, it would be good to get the man to open up a little. He'd never tried a fireball, usually it wasn't a good idea hurling fire around, plus fire is so superficial, it causes surface burns and makes people writhe in pain, Raelan preferred to end things quickly. He had no idea what a 'magic missile' was, and wasn't sure if Dante was being sarcastic on that note.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

Dante looked around, trying to figure out what he'd do. At first he was just going to do a small bit of magic. But you only live once right? He made a transparent orb and compressed it, along with the air inside of it. He also vibrated the air molecules as he compressed them. His arm was extended toward the orb and his hand was spread open. Red energy crackled from the orb as it grew smaller and smaller. His arm shook and his nose bleed, but his inner fire was roaring. The vibration and the compression superheated the air. Dante clenched his hand and suddenly pointed at a nearby boulder.

A dime size hole appeared in the orb, pointing at the rock. A crack that sounded like lightning was heard, a white hot beam exploded towards the rock. It was bright enough to hurt the eyes. The beam crashed into the rock and drilled a hole as wide as a dime but about four feet deep. Dante's fire was in full blaze now and he could feel every little magic sensation. He ignored his headache, bloody nose, and quivering body he was impressed with himself. He turned around and took a bow "how about that?"

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

When Dante started casting his spell, Lao-tzu's visage darkened.  The old sage was intensely aware of a foul and depraved wound emanating from Dante.  His damaged spirit seemed capable of drawing power only by flaying his mind, body, and soul.

The spell itself was shocking.  The blast nearly knocked Starcey and Raelan down, its thunder rolling through the valleys and echoing between peaks miles away. Dazed, blood began to trickle from Starcey's nose.  After Raelan's lightning blast and now this, everyone's ears were ringing.

Lao-tzu was disgusted.  Give these two men talent and power in magic, and they turn it towards violence and killing, even in a serene and peaceful environment, even after seeing a spell of such purity and beauty as his blessing of the earth.  Dante was clearly addicted to it in some fashion, was sick and couldn't help himself.  Raelan, on the other hand, seemed to be almost naive to the effect of casually displaying lethal force. And both did this in front of Starcey, whom they know was troubled by bullying magic-users.

The old wizard shook his head and decided to see how the others would respond before saying anything, especially the dazed girl.

Starcey thought to herself, I guess that's what I get when I ask a self-proclaimed 'dealer of death' to show me something. Idiot!

She picked herself up and wiped her nose on her sleeve, cursing quietly. To think that Lao-Tzu had almost convinced her that magic was nice - something she might want to learn to study or use! That magic could so things other than to trick or deceive, distort or destroy. No, magic was an undesirable force; it made people arrogant and cruel, inconsiderate at best. Growing up on Micc, a non-user in a world governed by magic, had taught her as much.

Looking at the three, she said: "Alright, can we go now?"

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

(that's not fair, ^-^ I was actually straining to think of attack spells that would work with Raelan's style magic, once Lao-Tsu investigates his magical prototypes more he'll see the softer side... and he only had the offensive crystal to demonstrate with Sad plus he'd had to learn some offensive styles given the hostile environment he grew up in)

Raelan cringed as he felt that spell gather, there was something he didn't like about the man, always felt like he'd dipped his hands in dirty oil every time he got close, this might be why.

"wow..."

His eyes teared up a little as the spell went off, it just seemed so sad, he liked Lao-Tsu's a lot better. His wings and tail swirled in colors of sadness, and drooped. That was very unnatural, and as linked as he was to the animal side of things, he had felt it tear through space. He walked to the rock with the hole now burned through it and his metalic hand shook slightly just before it picked up the rock. "How very sad..."

His hand closed over the rock and he closed his eyes concentrating, he couldn't match Lao-Tsu's spell without a lot of practice, but at least... Greens and blues coursed down his arm, and when he opened his hand the rock had become, not necessarily fertile, but dirt nonetheless. It glowed with his energy as he kept it charged, 'claimed' at least for the moment, and walked to the blackened scar in the dirt from his own spell, where he spread the dirt across and let the already active spell seep into the damaged dirt, as he placed his hand in the middle and reactivated it with more energy.

It was much clumsier than Lao-Tsu's and burned off almost all of his spare draconic parts, and the detection sphere shrank rapidly around him as he did. However he managed to deconstruct the burn, once again using his scientific background, and this time used the carbon to make the area instead of charred, more fertile if still a different darkish, blackish color. as he did he whispered "make some plant happy someday please."

He blinks himself out of his trance, and slowly stands up. It had taken more out of him than he'd expected. He exhales sharply and shakes his head to clear it. When the looks at Lao-Tsu he shrugs, and slumps some. "Best I could do, you'll have to teach me how you did that one sometime if you can and are willing. As it stands someone has a date with her planet of origin and we shouldn't delay that."

He let the sphere fade. First the ambient colors, then the plants, and finally what was left of his ghostly wings faded to normal invisibility, and he gestured to his ship and began moving that way himself, he needed to clear another seat unless someone wanted the bed.. though Dante might by the looks of him.

RE: Of Spaceport Markets

He didn't get the reaction he was expecting. His lifestyle was violent and cutthroat, offensive spells and weapons were natural to him, even normal . Dante realized something that his lifestyle made him forget; most spellcasters, no most people were not violent. His pride turned into shame, he scratched the back of his head. "Sorry," his voice was solemn "I guess I got carried away with myself, I guess I'm just so used to using magic as a 'weapon' if you will..." He looked at the others "yes I'm ready to go, I'll take my ship."
