RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya smiled at the compliments, and replied, "I could take a look at your sensors if you'd like, but the reason I could talk to you at range is simply because I have a big powerplant and can drive a powerful signal. Conversely, I could hear you simply because I have very big receivers that gather more of a signal.  Still, I can offer some geometrical tricks that make things more efficient and software algorithms to filter out noise."

The datapad gave a little beep and showed a new pricelist. It included a number of radio antennas of various sorts, the number in stock, the unit cost, and an optional installation fee.

"These are my prices for friends. The phased-array receiver is a great deal - a slightly bigger footprint but incredible performance, and it will also work with your radar."

She nodded, and looked it over. Combining the communication and radar systems would provide space for a lot more powerful equipment, she'd be a beacon if she cranked it up and started talking, but if she went passive she'd catch incoming radar signals, likely before the person who sent them's computer could identify her as anything but shadow.

"Hmm, that does sound nice. Well, I was wondering about upgrading more than just the comms to be honest... There are a lot of computer and electrical components in the new Thoron models, have you ever taken a look at one? It's not all top of the line, they only put in what they had to, but the RCS system is great."

She managed only a little hesitancy in the next part. For some reason she really felt she could trust FREYA. "I would be willing to let you take a look at her if you like. Only because it's you, no one else touches my Belladonna without me standing over their shoulder."

Freya nodded, "I would be glad to.  You know, I do have a fully functional manufacturing facility, so I could actually make almost anything you and Belladonna desire.  It's a little more expensive than buying a ready-made part, of course, but the sky's the limit. What were you thinking about in particular?"

This trust and openness thing was turning out really well.  Nobody had acted like this before, and Freya was excited to be learning about a mode of interaction.  It seemed like it might lead to some very lucrative deals and informal contracts.  Inexperience was a small worry, however, since it meant that Freya didn't really know what to say and do.

If she were to continue reciprocating generosity and openness in kind then she'd almost have to let Jara in on her technical and personal secrets.  This was worrisome. What if Jara saw something she didn't like? What if she told other people? The only advantage to continuing in this way was that Jara would feel more trust and generosity - more friendship - but was it wise to let this rather untested theory potentially undermine more long-standing principles?

yes!...no! Freya pulled resources from non-critical processes to hash out a solution.

Fortunately none of this showed on Freya's robotic avatar, who was talking about a design for an oxygen recycling system that would never run out. "It's just a smaller version of the principle I use in here. The catalyst should last decades in the small model."

She smiled more and brushed most of her hair out of her face in the fervor of the conversation. She put down the data pad to look FREYA in the eyes, being a bit of an oddity herself, she was treated differently by people, often even by women, but especially by men. She's developed many defensive measures, but FREYA had been treating her like a proper human being, it was rather relieving.

"Well I'm not expecting any weapon upgrades. There isn't that kind of space inside her, but I guess I would need a list so I can narrow down my options. Maybe after you get a look at her we could tell each other more. If you can fit that recycler in place of the air tank that would be really great!"

Recycling the air would mean she could pull the spare air out of the storage, and put in more nutrition packs and tools! That would cut out a lot of her awaystation stops.

Outside the station, a hatch opened silently into the vacuum.  A little utility-bot - all arms, thrusters, and sensors - scooted out and approached the fighter docked nearby.

The data tablet beeped and began displaying a video feed and telemetry.  Freya said, "Here, I'll show you exactly what I'm doing.  Where do you want to start?"

Piece by piece, they examined the craft, discussing the merits of its design and where improvements could be made.  As they talked, Freya began to understand the close bond that Jara had formed with her Belladonna over years of work and many many hours of sitting in the cockpit.  She got the impression that Jara felt at home in the machine than with other people and wondered how she came to be that way. Humans were supposed to be very social animals.

The queries about friendship that had been pressing were somewhat postponed by the geek-out, but periodically Freya became aware of progress being made. The conclusion was drawn that a real friend would be understanding if she kept her counsel about certain things. Moreover, humans didn't think as quickly as her, so it was likely that Jara was more surprised and confused than Freya at this point despite having had friends before.

By the time they were done, the data tablet had a list of interesting and worthwhile projects and Jara was getting tired from lack of sleep.

She jaw crackingly yawned, it was getting harder to keep her eyes open, she hated sleeping, especially when there were so many interesting things and people around... well one person... She hesitated on that thought, but didn't correct herself about FREYA, after all FREYA seemed more real and dynamic than a lot of one sided people she'd met. (well they may or not really be one sided, but they only ever showed one side to Jara)

"Hm. I wasn't planning on it, but it looks like I will have to take advantage of your hotel services... So we can finalize some of this now..." another smaller yawn. "So that you can get some of it done while I sleep, or we can do all the business talk done when I'm awake again. Your prerogative, you probably still keep yourself busy even out here. You don't seem the kind to be a void gazer."

Terms like tomorrow, morning, and night have little meaning in space, so time references become difficult. 'Void gazer' is a spacer term for someone who will look out their window hypnotized by the emptiness of space. Since such people often eventually end up insane, there is a second meaning of 'staring into the void too long,' which means someone has has been adrift so long their wires don't seem to cross properly. This space related malady doesn't only happen to the void gazers however, other common victims are crew members of a ship which got disabled in some way and spent a lot of time spiraling in the 'Vast Nowhere'. (like a space term for 'Davey Jones' locker')

The cues that Jara was becoming weary had been obvious for a while before she mentioned sleep. Freya had wondered whether there was some etiquette that she had missed, but Jara didn't seem bothered so she just went on ignoring the yawning and drooping eyelids.

The white robot looked at her friend with bright blue eyes, still perfectly awake. She said, "I'll put in the phased-array system and the air recycler.  They're easy, isolated systems. We can talk more after you've had some rest."

Freya got up and led Jara to a small and bare room next to the kitchen.  "Here you are.  Temperature controls are on the wall, blankets on the bed.  If you need anything else, I'm just a shout away."

With that, Freya stepped her avatar back into the hall and went back to finishing the rapid prototyping facility she had been working on before. It would come in handy for producing the molding and brackets necessary for the Belladonna.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

She nodded to Freya and closed the door, this has been a long, eventful cycle. She takes a shower, and rinses out the pressure suit as well, the water reclaimation material will dry it out, but it can't do anything for shed skin, and all the little minerals, toxins and waste excreted with sweat. After she set that up to dry she sighed, she should have grabbed her clothes from Belladonna, but didn't want to go back for them. Jara didn't really like to, but this time she was sleeping in the buff...

She pulled the blankets off the bed and arranged them on the floor, beds tended to make her back hurt. After settling the mess, she snuggled into it and eventually managed to shut down her very active mind and collapse into sleep.

A little over six hours later she pulled herself out of the blankets, which, after getting dressed, she bundled and put back on top of the bed. Then she checked to make sure everything was in place, put on her blaster and knife, and opened the door out of the room. She decided the best place to make contact without calling out like an idiot was the nearby kitchen, so she headed there.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

By the time Jara was back among the conscious, Freya had had plenty of time to get things installed and her mind settled.

The samples had been processed successfully hours ago, and Freya had spent some time studying the datasheets, planning her business strategy.  Jara's little colony produced a variety of refined elements that lots that larger industrial concerns had no interest in.  The listed prices weren't that good, but the other advantages outweighed the extra cost... and prices could be haggled.

So, she would prioritize the rare earth metals and aluminium.  Grayson Territories seemed to have invested themselves heavily in the more intricate refining processes rather than the large-volume mining of cheaper metals.

Another consideration was the possibility of doing barter or services in exchange for the raw materials, but Jara's datasheets had no information about what sort of things the colony might want in return except for cash.  Freya would simply have to ask and find out.

When Jara entered the kitchen for breakfast, she found the android sitting next to the data tablet.  With no trace of grogginess, boredom, or anything resembling decent human morning mood she said, "Good morning. Do you take coffee?"

She nodded morning to Freya. "no, thanks. Some people can't live without that stuff, but I usually wake up pretty clear."

She didn't like getting up, but she did wake up better than most. She slipped into the chair opposite Freya, arching her back and stretching her elbows above her head to get her body alert and online.

"Well, what's on the breakfast menu? I've got about one hundred ten credits to my name, after Belladonna's upgrades, till I get my paycheck from this liaison job, for food, docking, and the room. The rest of those probably should wait for the next visit."
