It runs just fine and seems like it ended up being close to $800 total. Not too bad for a decent AR. It did take eight months for them to finally ship my kit though. I think at the last gun show we went to, Del-ton lowers were down around $125. Not that anybody cares, but here's a crummy picture of my purple AR. (Which nowadays is sporting an ambidextrous sling ring on the rear of the receiver and a single-point sling.)

Not bad!  A local shop turned me on to DPMS, where you can build a complete rifle virtually and have your FFL dealer order it in.  He also told me that it's always cheaper to buy a complete rifle than it is to buy parts but I'm still skeptical... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The M107 Anti-Materiel Rifle. It is a complete lie that a complete rifle is cheaper than building your own. There is no way you will get the rifle you want cheaper than by building it yourself. Believe that.

It really depends on what you want and what you can find. I wouldn't say buying a whole rifle is always cheaper, nor would I say building one is always cheaper. I took a quick look on Gunbroker and a Bushmaster was about $1000 for the equivalent of what I built from Del-Ton parts for about $820. Though you could say that's comparing apples to oranges, so I compared prices on a lower receiver parts kit and a complete upper assembly from Bushmaster's web site plus the first Bushmaster stripped receiver I saw on Gunbroker and it comes out to about $840 for the same type of gun as mentioned above. However, my first AR was a Bushmaster and I got it brand new for $700 and didn't have to build it. So it all really depends on what you can find.

I think with your Bushmaster, God smiled down on you and said "This boy deserves an AR15 on the cheap." and it was so. That's a once in a lifetime occurrence. For all intents and purposes, you're NOT going to find a brand new AR15 for $700.

Sounds like I still have a lot of research ahead of me.  For now I'm happy with my bullpup but I know a lot of people who would like to own an AR-15.  I may decide to try both ordering a custom one and building one just so that I can rate the differences between the two experiences. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The M107 Anti-Materiel Rifle.
