Dante Eccentric Assasin 12/13/2008 1:18:54 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 42 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets He set a device back down and looked around for an empty chair. Dante found one and leaned back in it. He surveyed his surroundings and watched as Raelan dissapated his energy. Dante focused hard to see the energy clearer. Dante was not a very refined spellcaster himself prefering to use guns and hand-to-hand combat when he needed to kill someone. Although he did admit that magic had it's uses. Dante stopped trying to see the energy as a painful migraine overtook him. He clenched his teeth and tried not to let the others notice. Raelan inventor/mage 12/13/2008 5:14:04 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets Once he saw his passengers situated Raelan took his own seat, and after giving the codes to the spaceport to keep him registered at this planet he hooked his cybernetic hand into a device exactly like the one on the work table which was interfaced with the control mechanisms of the ship. He burst into his grin again. "Now, I've got limited experience using this in atmosphere, but the compensation won't be that hard." With his left hand he gave the commands to break dock, and pulled out a small portable computer. Without Raelan touching the controls, for which one would typically need both hands, the ship left dock and somewhat jerkily at first, but quickly smoothing out he manually followed the spaceport's commands to take off and to leave their airspace. When a thought occurred to him he'd note it on the computer, but otherwise his left hand stayed completely at rest. It was easily assumed that he was controlling the ship with the use of his cybernetic hand and the device it was attached to. "Now, ummm Lao? you said your name was, sorry.... You're navigating, just tell me where to go, you could just give me the coordinates if you like, but that kills all the fun." He then began putting the craft through a series of minor swoops and darts to test the differences between space and atmosphere which he then noted in the computer. Of course being that gravity was on, the passengers (and Raelan's stuff) feet very little if anything at all, but it became obvious looking through the windows. |
Lao-tzu Ancient Thinker 12/13/2008 7:11:51 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 56 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets The ancient wizard eagerly peered out of the windows. "Yes, let us take the scenic route. This ship is quite marvelous, by the way, us indigenes of Micc rarely use such high technology for transportation and it is a true pleasure. In any case, you can see the shining spires of Micc's capital metropolis to the left. My, we're quite high already." He spent a few moments peering around before continuing. Dante's sudden malaise registered in Lao-tzu's mystical empathic faculties, but he decided to let Dante keep his counsel if he so chose. "Please head a few hand-spans north of the sun for about fifty miles. That way lies one of the largest crystal fields of the planet and a popular tourist attraction called 'the mudpots', both of which should be quite visible from the sky." Lao-tzu smiled at some private joke. He said, "It is funny. Ordinarily my journey home takes many days, involves meeting dozens of people, and is filled with moments both happy and sad. This modern conveyance allows us to cover twice as much ground in a fraction of a day, but I expect it will be much less eventful." Silently, he concluded, No wonder a journey of a month is considered boring. Raelan seemed proud of his vessel and the way he was controlling it. Lao-tzu was under the impression that the single-handed interface was quite unusual, but he couldn't be sure. He would ask pilot to give a taste of his skill and have a little fun, but he sensed that wild and daring aerobatics was probably the last thing Dante wanted right then. Instead, he chattered on about the landscape they were passing over. |
Dante Eccentric Assasin 12/16/2008 7:43:25 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 42 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets (Guys, this weather has been playing heck with my health and internet connection feel free to skip me in posting ok?) Dante listened to Lao-tzu and stood up to look out the window to get a better view. He was interested in the scenery and what Lao-tzu said. "That's true but sometimes it's better to just take the faster route" he stated over his shoulder. Dante sat back down and leaned back in the chair "Hey Raelan ever think of joining a barnstorming league?". Dante nearly falls out of the chair he decides having all four chair legs on the ground would be safer "I'm sure you'd win at least a silver medal with that setup you have there". Anxiety is the essential condition of intellectual and artistic creation |
Raelan inventor/mage 12/16/2008 8:14:59 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets (sorry to hear that, I'm not in my best health either, my entire family got sick, and I'm battling it off in the early stages, my internet's fine though) Raelan chuckled and followed Lao-Tsu's directions keeping an eye out for the mentioned landmarks and places of interest. "Barnstorming league? I'm not sure I know what that is, but this," his left hand gestured to the device his immobile right hand was hooked into, "isn't quite perfected yet, still some bugs that could cause problems for someone who doesn't know the programming like I do. It's getting close though, unfortunately it requires a cybernetic hand to operate. Once I get this perfected I'm wanting to work into more complete interfaces, unfortunately those will take more advanced implants than a hand, but it also won't require cutting anything off..." He chuckled again at his own morbid humor and smoothed out his flight to make things easier to spot through the window. "My specialty is cybernetics and magic, I've picked up a lot of programming, but I'm also shortcutting a lot of the programming with a couple enchantments right now, mostly sensory data, so the real model should be all mechanical." |
Lao-tzu Ancient Thinker 12/17/2008 3:47:38 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 56 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets Lao-tzu paused in his tourist prattle while Dante and Raelan talked about the tech stuff. When Raelan finished he said, "You want to cut out the magic in order to make it a manufacturable good, correct? The translation of magical effect into engineered reality is exceptionally challenging. Success will be extremely impressive and I would guess equally lucrative." They had passed the Mudpots and the colorful Crystal Fields of Myrh and were now moving over a dense forest that was dotted with small logging towns, trapping outposts, and the glowing green Mother Trees of the local Kiefan tribes. The wizard spoke of an old Kiefan sage who lived in the middle of the forest and crafted beautifully ornate and delicate living spells, elements of magical energy that acted on their own, had children, grew old, and died. Kiefans in the Verdant Forest practiced a natural form of magic that guided organisms into effortless cooperation and symbiosis. Ordinary manufactured goods were practically unknown among them and considered suspicious. Beyond the forest, a series of foothills gave way to a modest mountain range with a few white peaks. Lao-tzu indicated a point between two peaks and said that his home was on a mountain beyond the pass. |
Raelan inventor/mage 12/17/2008 10:00:17 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets Raelan glanced wistfully at the trees, he'd mostly forgotten the keifan were his people, but it still tugged tugged at his mind. That and a symbiosis style magic seemed like a wonderful style to learn. However he snickered at their mentality of manufactured products and glanced at his hand, they would either be impressed at him forming a symbiosis with a manufactured product, or more likely see him as a demon or abomination. He sighed, he wasn't sure he'd be able to take too many hostile encounters with his own people, he didn't regret anything in his life, everything was important and made him who he was now, but that didn't mean he'd go striding in wantonly and make more negative memories. The ship steered to the mountain pass after a slight lingering on the view of the trees. "Well in this case I'm just using the magic to create and manipulate the senses in my hand. The same effect can be programmed into the device, but I'm not willing to spend the time smashing away on the computer to code it all just yet. I can do it, but programming isn't my strongest point... Come to think of it... if the user doesn't have my enchantment on their cybernetic hand they're going to be very surprised that it feels at all... I'll have to make a note of warning to that effect..." |
Lao-tzu Ancient Thinker 12/18/2008 7:55:31 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 56 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets (sorry Dante, but I just had to geek out a minute) Lao-tzu listened to Raelan describe his problem and suddenly looked very distant as he lost himself in the triune worlds of Magic, Mind, and Mathematics. After a few moments, the old wizard became present once more and said, "Excuse the possibly naive question, but have you tried doing the programming by casting a spell? A proper Cadence of Impermanence applied to a binary field of sufficient size might allow you to use a simple optimization technique to derive a working program, and the optimization itself could be done on the Abstract Plane with a generalized Swarm Incantation." The unstated assumptions in the suggested magic were multitudinous and severe. Most magic-users wouldn't even have heard of the Abstract Plane and the application of a Cadence to a digital device was a daunting task for even the most practiced enchanter. The words sank in for a few seconds, and then Lao-tzu said, "Never mind, my friend, it seems the Third Law of Mystra would allow the program to only work on one cybernetic hand at a time, negating the point of the endeavor. Sorry for wasting your time..." |
Dante Eccentric Assasin 12/18/2008 10:36:30 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 42 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets Dante looked down upon the forest of the Keifans. He was only half Keifan himself which gave him some natural talent for magic. Unfortunantly due to no training it was unrefined and when used resembled more of a small blaze that could easily escalate into an inferno, but it could also die out. Dante recalled a time when he tried to use his "Sleep" spell on someone and his power flared up on accident. The poor victim slept for two days straight. He sat there dumbfounded as Lao-tzu talked he decided to keep his mouth shut. Once Lao-tzu finished he asked "So...what're your guys' stories?". He was curious as to their origins. |
Raelan inventor/mage 12/18/2008 10:54:20 PM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 94 | RE: Of Spaceport Markets (mystra huh? hee hee) Raelan went cross-eyed at the complicated swirl of terms that just flew out of the man's mouth. As a mostly self taught mage he had no clue what any of those words meant, even if he happened to use a few of them on occasion (such as the abstract plane) if he even knew he was using them his names for them were much more simplistic and utilitarian. "ummm.... wise one...." He completely did not intend that as flattery, it was his mental nickname that came out in confusion. "I have taught myself nearly everything I know, my village and family used a very different magic than the way I use mine. I'm afraid I have no idea what any of those terms meant. But mass producing an enchanted item is very tedious even alongside trying to program a magic binary into every unit... Everything that I make that will be enchanted would have a limited audience, made up especially of people I can trust won't do harm with the kind of dangerous tools I can create..." Responding to Dante he turned his head "My village kicked me out when I was fairly young, and I ran off to live and forage on my own... On Fierra Mesa... I gave that up after I lost my hand and almost my life to the local 'wildlife' I got lucky twice, I don't want to tempt fate again. |
