Valerie Fas'nvak Ex-tournament fighter/ ninja accountant Dominion Master 11/16/2008 1:45:46 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 126 | RE: Fighting Skies Valerie had climbed inside and closed the door to work on herself. It took her a moment to figure out how to even use Hugo's suggested analgesic patch, but she managed. She had also taken the opportunity, while Hugo was outside working on the craft and Mattias was outside watching him, to quickly apply a bandage under her pants. Given how much time it had taken her to apply it, by the time Hugo asked how the patch was working, it hadn't really had time to work. Valerie: Uh, it's not, but I'm ready to go. The longer we stick around, the longer more pirates have to come along and put more slag in me. Now that she thought about it, her leg had stopped aching, but the hole still hurt like the dickens. She tried to lean away from it. She then noticed that, conveniently, the KA-BAR she took from that guy had somehow found its way over here. It's funny what explosions will do. She picked it up and wrapped it in one of the random cloths in her bag. Valerie: Hey, where was that dirigible you were on going? I'm guessing it isn't exactly— She paused and concentrated. Mattias: Isn't exactly what? Valerie shushed him and leaned out the door. It was getting louder fast. Hugo would probably remember thinking that they were expecting a plane landing here. Turns out he was right. It was a large cargo plane, swooping in slowly; the pilot could apparently see the tarmac wasn't clear at the last second, barely clearing the control tower as it picked up speed and flew over with a deafening roar. All she could think of were recoilless rifles and autocannons protruding from the cargo plane's side, though not having seen such a thing. She just wanted to leave. Now. Valerie: I want to leave. Now. |

Hugo steamed at the close pass of the cargo plane as the backwash of its six huge engines buffeted the little 'thopter. With quick hand motions, he flipped the switches to turn on the powerplant and engage the motors. "Hold on tight, I'm getting us out of here.", he yelled as he maxed out the thrust. The ornithopter's small thruster blasted down and back while the wings beat at the air. The flyer roughly dragged itself along the ground for a jolting few meters until it caught the wind and rose steeply into the sky. The big cargo plane was circling around in a wide arc to try for another landing. Hugo marveled at seeing such a large plane trying to land on such a small and soft runway at night. Only the foolhardiest or the most desperate of smugglers would risk disaster like that. A part of Hugo wanted to harass the plane and make it crash, but he'd had enough violence to last him a while. And there was no telling how long the ornithopter would stay tuned if he started pulling wild maneuvers. Instead, Hugo extinguished all the lights and flew blindly back in the direction of the volcano. He spoke loudly to overcome the noise of flight, "I figure we'll head back towards where I picked you guys up and camp somewhere out of sight. Tomorrow we can search the wreckage of the bandit dirigible for valuables and information on who they are. They seem to have more resources than regular marauders and I'd like to find out why." Flying slowly to conserve fuel and maintaining a low radar profile, the flight would take almost an hour. Hugo hoped Val could stand the long wait to properly treat her wound. Powerful as the patch was, it wouldn't keep her from feeling the nasty shard of shrapnel lodged in her flesh. |

She lost it for a few moments, but as the airstrip shrank quietly behind them, she noticed the plane touch down on the tarmac. She breathed a sigh of relief, sat back, and tried not to make reflexive sucking noises at the pain. This is when Hugo announced his plan. Mattias: Wait, what? Go back there? They wanted my plane, and not only is my plane there, but so's their dirigible. Not that I'm against seeing my plane again, but... Valerie: Well, what I was trying to say before was that I bet wherever the Werrington Express was going is probably pretty safe from pirates. How far away would that be? She started to notice that the analgesic was really working. At this point it only felt something like she was sitting on two angry wasps. She had half a mind to take the now-bent and chipped KA-BAR combat knife and dig that mother out right now, but decided against it. |
QuantumTroll Street Fighter/Space Station 11/18/2008 8:43:29 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 181 | RE: Fighting Skies Hugo shook his head and stayed the course. Trying to explain his thoughts, he said, "If they wanted your plane, why did they shoot it until it stopped working? They just wanted to rob you while waiting for a more substantial prize. More importantly, if the Werrington Express was fine, why didn't they respond to our radio calls? I've been thinking about it, and frankly the only conclusion I can come to is that it got shot down by the other jetfighters that I did not take down. There were two or three missing by the time I wrecked the one." "Also, I wouldn't call Avesta Ruin safe. Rick Sonny is there with a bunch of goons - no offense - looking to earn the bounty on my head. Anyway, we're about 250 miles out, which is just about the max range of an Albatross in optimum conditions, which this is definitely not." "The good news is that not too many fast aircraft can land in the rough. Those jetfighters need tarmac or smooth dirt. A dirigible could land, but would need about 24 hours to get to the crash site. If I'm right, we'll be the only ones there for hours, plenty of time to get what we need and get out." |

Valerie simply nodded and closed her eyes. There wasn't much else to do, other than put another one of those patches on or take some pills and probably have some crazy side effects. She mulled over the thought of one of these guys digging around her rear to dig out that shrapnel. It wasn't a pleasant thought, but on the other hand, leaving it in there was possibly less pleasant. Possibly. She wasn't positive. Valerie: So. If it hasn't all burned up, they'll probably have a good amount of fuel in the crashed dirigible. That means we'll be able to make it pretty far. Mattias: We could probably make it back to Falun on what we have already. Valerie: Do we want to? Mattias: It wouldn't be bad. It's too big for a serious pirate presence, like Avesta Ruin. But there's also no... what's-his-face. Valerie: Sonny. And we can get my luggage out of your plane. Mattias: ... You brought luggage? |
QuantumTroll Street Fighter/Space Station 11/19/2008 4:04:36 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 181 | RE: Fighting Skies Hugo yawned, "Good. That's settled. Now how about we land this thing somewhere and we get some shut-eye? We're ten, fifteen minutes from where we're going and the landscape is getting more rough. Landing among obsidian spires on a mountain requires daylight, I think." He started dropping altitude and slowing down to see if he could catch more detail in the black landscape underneath the little ornithopter. |

It seemed to go smoothly, as Hugo masterfully brought the craft to a stop on the ground. Mattias yawned. Mattias: Too bad I didn't bring a sleeping bag. Valerie: Hey. No sleeping yet. I want this thing out tonight. It's crunch time. Mattias: Thing? Valerie: The piece of shrapnel in my glutes. Mattias: Say what? Valerie: ... Dude, catch up. A grenade went off about five feet away from me. I've been bleeding on the seat the whole way. Mattias suddenly showed concern on his face. Mattias: Ooouuch! Valerie: Yeah. And I'm not sleeping with the thing, so... |
QuantumTroll Street Fighter/Space Station 11/21/2008 6:04:14 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 181 | RE: Fighting Skies Hugo wearily got out of the craft. He said, "I've got some medical training from my, uh, time in, uh, as a bouncer. Had to patch up the hurts I dished out..." He seemed strangely uncertain about that, but quickly moved on while finding and turning on a small lamp on the wing. He said, "I've never taken a piece of metal out of someone before, but I know how to keep bleeding and pain down, put in stitches and such. Do you have any experience, Mattias?" Hugo got the medkit out of the plane and laid it down by the light, rifling through the contents. |
Valerie Fas'nvak Ex-tournament fighter/ ninja accountant Dominion Master 11/22/2008 12:51:50 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 126 | RE: Fighting Skies Mattias shrugged uncertainly. Mattias: I had to pull a stick out of my dad's arm once. I don't think that really applies here. I have no clue. Valerie sighed. Valerie: Fine. Here's what you do: step one, pour some antiseptic in there; step two, dip some needle nosed pliars in some alcohol; step three, stick it in there; step four, take it out. Mattias: Yeah, but it's not just going to come out. I'm probably going to cause more damage if I just yank it out. Valerie: So don't yank it. You're not going to kill me; there's hardly anything important there. Mattias didn't look convinced and Hugo was still rifling through the medkit. Valerie's brow furrowed. Valerie: You're not getting out of this! Not only am I not waiting to get to a hospital, but I'm not going to a hospital anyway because they're going to charge me about fifteen hundred to get it out, which I happen to not have, since, as you might recall, I passed up a bounty on a certain someone. Plus, principles. Mattias: I get it. Fine, I'll do it. Do you have something for me to write up a waiver? Valerie just gave him a nasty look. Mattias: Okay. He took a breath and looked at Hugo. Mattias: You tell me what stuff to use and I'll get to it. Might as well get it over with. |
QuantumTroll Street Fighter/Space Station 11/23/2008 4:30:01 AM Level: 1 Experience: 0 Total Posts: 181 | RE: Fighting Skies Hugo wondered why Valerie was so hell-bent on having Mattias do it instead of someone with even a little experience, but he decided it wouldn't do any harm and Mattias might learn something. He finished getting out stuff and said, "Here are your tools. Little towel, pliers, disinfectant, adhesive strips, gauze. You have to clean up the wound before going in. I'm thinking you'll be causing more bleeding and tearing when taking it out, so be quick with the patching up or it'll get really messy." Silently he hoped that Mattias would know to pin the skin together so it would heal nicely, but that should obvious, right? No sense in being a total babysitter, but then again Mattias was very nervous. If only he had some whiskey to steady the nerves... He looked at Valerie. "How is the pain? Mattias is going to need you pretty relaxed, so maybe we should give you a hypo?" |
