RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

"GO!" he yelled at them. "I order you to enter the lifeboat!"

So many times, he had forced his enemies to do what he wished. Through the use of force, wits, and undeserved bravado, he had successfully conquered countless vessels, and sent each of the crews to a nearby law enforcement agency, usually packaged with encriminating evidence and some broken bones.

This was a first in the life of the captain, in multiple ways. It was the first time he used his rank in such a way, and the first time he did it to people he knew to be good and just, proud and righteous, friendly and knowing. But most importantly, it was the first time he
didn't know where his captives were going.

"Hopefully somewhere safe," he muttered.

Those pirates would have known I would stay with the ship. So they would leave the lifeboat alone...

Jara saw in her imagination an image of the Calamitous lifeboat getting picked up by a chasing capital ship, bristling with weapons.

Unless they'd catch them... to get to me!

Freya's buffering program recorded a spike in Kapitein's breathing and heart rate while Jara's vision faded to nothingness and Kapitein's mind returned to the void. Freya's executive function had its attention occupied, and the focus lay on the two robots. RD-2 had already completed half a turn by the time RD-1 arrived. With two robots synchronized to the same time server, they closed both valves simultaneously within 500 milliseconds.

Unfortunately, the degradation of the fusion core continued unabated - the damage was already done. However, with valves closed, and massive structural damage in the hull, the RD-1 and RD-2 subprograms executed a contingent plan and succeeded in redirecting the blast away from the front region of the ship by perforating certain structures in the ship, and reinforcing others. Aside from the scrap metal value being somewhat increased, it also resulted in minimal damage to the hyperspace drive. Only a detailed analysis would show whether it could actually be restored to working order, but at the very least it would deliver a deluge of spare parts.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Jara was not prone to daydreaming, not while something important was happening. What was that? She shook her head to clear it and began decelerating to let the space station catch up with her fighter. Relativity in space is a wonderful and fascinating thing, you could be moving at whatever crazy speed you like, yet feel like you're holding still if the things near you are moving at the same rate. in this case it appeared as if the fighter was backing up from the wreck toward the approaching station. Jara of course was so used to this phenomenon that she didn't even notice.

she fired her engines as briefly and gently as she could, quite aware that she would feel less of it than the figure now soldered to her wing.

"Mr. Piet, if you come to, please don't panic. I'm getting you to the station, we can see to your injuries there."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

As Jara carefully maneuvered into the narrow slot of the spacedock (a "large" airlock would have meant something else on any other spacestation), the reactor aboard Calamitous finally went critical.  As overflow valves reached their capacity and neutron buffers became saturated, energy production turned on itself in a feedback loop that escalated with astounding speed. In mere seconds, the entire future power output of the reactor freed itself from the tight embrace of atomic bonds and turned the ship into the equivalent of a star going nova.

The intense blast of gamma rays and alpha particles easily overwhelmed the robots' radiation shields and melted their circuitry to slag. A regrettable loss, but their efforts had not been in vain. While the entire aft section was reduced to energetic blobs of metal, the fore held together and was remarkably well-preserved. The damage caused from recoil shock and ionizing radiation wouldn't be apparent until later, but it seemed likely that the entire thing was nothing but inert scrap.

As intense as the blast was, it was still subject to the inverse-square law of intensity and at the distance of the station it was just enough to give an unshielded human a sunburn.

If Freya had feet, she would have been stamping them impatiently at having to wait for Jara to dock before continuing the interception maneuver. To make things easier for everyone, she kept the artificial gravity in that section off.  The android was standing by in the hangar with a toolbox and some things that might come in handy when fixing a human.

"Okay, Jara, just set her down and I will cut him loose. I'm almost completely unfamiliar with animal biology, so you'll have to take the lead on this... is there anything you need?"

Jara settled Belladonna in, opened the cockpit, and brought her toolbox on her way out. She was limited in medical knowledge herself. In space firefights one usually died or came out nearly intact.

"It depends what he has Freya, the basics would be fabric for bandages, and some small but sturdy rods if anything is broken. I don't think I can treat anything beyond that."

She could tell the kind of suit he was in was nearly an antique. It didn't have the nimbleness and grace of a new suit, but it probably protected him better than hers would have. It was however, impossible to use such a clumsy thing in any new age fighter.

Very grateful for the lack of gravity she opened her toolbox and helped cut the man away from Belladonna, again cringing at Bella's poor marred armor. As soon as he was free she removed her helmet (the airlock had pressurized by then) and his. He was breathing, and had a pulse, both good signs, but it looked like he'd taken a good hit to the head by the forming bruise on the side of it. She set to pulling off the rest of his spacesuit very carefully, happy that he was fully clothed underneath... (your character, again, I don't know what damage you took)

Further investigation revealed Kapitein had some bruises, but he showed no indications of internal contusions, broken bones, or other serious damage. With fluids, plenty of air, and some time, he would probably wake up and be fine - assuming he didn't have a serious concussion or brain damage.

Jara bandaged his head and put a cold compress on the bruise to keep down the swelling, and hoped for the best.

Two hours later, he finally stirred, and a few minutes later opened his eyes groggily.

"Urrgghghhh..."

His gaze passed around the room haphazardly, cross-eyed and disaffected, until they finally focused on Jara who was monitoring his progress. Kapitein's face regained some structure, and his eyes caught a glint.

"Ha-ha-harrr.. You're a sight for sore eyes. Ye got any water, by any chance?"

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

About an hour earlier, Freya had managed to catch up to the tumbling wreckage that was the Calamitous.  Had Jara been outside, she would have seen entire chunks of Freya's hull come off as the station configured itself to take on the salvage operation.  Hastily-assembled spools of magnetic cabling unwound and tied the ship to the spacestation.

It was an odd sight, the two spacecraft.  Two uneven metallic shapes stuck together with thin gray fibers, one a smoking hulk roughly one-eighth size of the quasi-cylindrical other. Sparks were already flying in tight spirals in the magnetic field, as lasers carved fist-sized chunks out of the structure.

Managing the lasers and the magnetic tractors was taking nearly all of Freya's concentration. She experimented with a new way of conserving the footprint of her natural language routines without losing intonation and emotiveness.

When Kapitein Piet started stirring and woke up, Freya slowed down her work and moved more of her awareness to the android in the room. She heard a deep bass hum emanating from her station's belly and felt good.  Her robot visage smiled at Jara when Kapitein Piet spoke.

Amazing, she thought to herself, Biological beings work so subtly I didn't even notice any change, but now he seems healed. But why shut yourself down right when you most need to be moving? Idiosyncratic...

Jara smiled through her hair and handed him the water she'd asked Freya to keep on hand for when he came to. Aside from the head wound his injuries were as good as could be expected, something positive to mark up for the old suits.

She said nothing otherwise, waiting his cues to decide what she would do. The hum of an entire station salvaging was new to her, a strange vibration in the floor, and it reminded her that she was in an alien place. She looked to he new found friend Freya and gave her a nod and smile as well. At least Jara considered her a friend, void knew what Freya thought of her.

"Ahhh, thanks. Now that's refreshing!"

Kapitein Piet risked sitting up, winced at the bursting headache the effort caused, came to rest slouching on the bedside, and noticed the robot standing in the room.

"Is that a helper droid you have there? Listen - I need to speak with the officer-in-charge of this here space station about what's going to happen with my ship. I'm sure he's a reasonable fellow; could you arrange that for me while I try to keep my brain from leaking out of my pores?"

It was a bit more brusque than intended, but the headache made it hard to think.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

The old captain didn't like to waste time, for sure!  He also seemed to be suffering under a misunderstanding.  This might be useful, given that Freya had no idea of what sort of man this was.  She ran through countless possible lies, but none of them really held up given what was already said and what Piet would find on board.  Therefore, any lie would be temporary and useful only as a delaying tactic.  Freya opted for honesty instead.

The android said, "The woman you're speaking to is the only other living person currently aboard this station, and is here as my guest and business associate."

Gesturing to herself, she said, "This android is a part of me, Freya, and acts as an avatar for people to interact with. As for your ship, I tried to save as much of it as possible, but the reactor went critical and blew a fifth of it away outright. While you were unconscious, I managed to tie it to the side of the station and begin reclaiming the base materials from the hull."

Aware that the captain was being presented with an entirely different scenario than he was expecting, Freya stopped to let him digest what he had heard.  A lot of things were left unsaid, like the way that two fine robots were sacrificed in the rescue, and how she was engineering a new type of bot using the materials she was harvesting to improve the extraction rate because a handful of small lasers was very slow-going on armor.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya did enjoy being blunt. To be honest it was a little refreshing, and when Piet looked at her she nodded confirmation. She felt far more self conscious to be labeled the only other living person here, it felt... awkward. So she sat and continued to watch Piet from behind her hair, and almost wished she'd put normal clothes on, though she knew she'd be even less comfortable in them.

It made her thoughts drift to Bella, and she hoped everything would be fine with a good sanding and some touch up paint. She'd considered changing her color from the standard issue gunmetal gray, but she'd have to choose it carefully. Stick out too well, and you're dead.
