RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya looked unperturbed.  What Kapitein Piet said was of course very important to him, but it was almost irrelevant to their situation and to Freya herself.  Almost irrelevant, but not quite.

Magic was an oddity that she had had very little contact with, but it didn't matter so much. What mattered was what Piet said the magic told him about his crew and Lord Tenerife.  If the crew were captured, then either they were dead and Piet would certainly know or they'd certainly contact Piet.  If the crew got away, then perhaps Piet would not be contacted for some reason. Since Piet was uncertain, the most likely scenario by far was that the crew was still free.

This, combined with the Krakatau's continued tardiness implied that the Dark Lord was (or at least had been) distracted. Good news, to be sure, but they still didn't know when or if a huge battleship would be approaching.

Freya said, "Thank you. It seems to me like your [crew] probably has saved our lives by escaping, or at least postponed our destruction. However, [none of this] changes our options if the lord of Tenerife does [hyperspace] in. We cannot engage in combat and must maintain [closed counsel] as much as possible so he does not perceive the true situation. Please [focus] on [that]."

The words were few and poorly rendered, but she hoped the two humans would accept them. The make-over and salvage operation engaged her entire production pipeline, and orchestrating the robots and processes was taking a toll. Jara had seemed to understand her earlier; Freya hoped that she could work with Piet to figure out the human interaction aspect of the solution that Freya was already working on so hard but decided to spare the resources to figure out words to communicate this desire.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya's voice went rapidly from fluent to a mechanical that was choppier than even when Mr. Piet's ship popped into a collision course, this worried her, but Freya would have said something if something was wrong. Otherwise since most of this was out of her range she just kept her stare on Mr. Piet from behind her hair.

her mind flashed back to the odd daydream she had during Piet's rescue, it's not the sort of thing her mind would wander off to. "When that woman ....communicates with you is it like a dream that overrides your normal senses, like vision?"

Jara's description struck a chord.

"Aye, like a daydream, yes. Why? Did you see something out of the ordinary; something that could have bearing on the situation? Do you know if my crew got away?"

The captain looked at her with sad, hopeful eyes.

He looked so hopeful and she only had bad news... She cringed sympathetically.

"Just as you were welded onto Belladonna's hull I had an odd daydream hit me, not something I'm prone to. If that's how it works I'm sorry, it seems your crew was captured, that monster of a ship caught the escape pod."

He would likely want to try a rescue but with their current status it would be impossible. Belladonna would pass through their shield and every electronic component would die instantly, Thorons don't come with shields of their own. And it wasn't likely Freya could do anything by force, which left them their only option, survival, and he could attempt a rescue later.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

While Jara spoke, a tell-tale electromagnetic shockwave rippled through empty space a little over 2 AU away. It would take over 16 minutes for the radiation (strongly attenuated) would reach Freya's sensor array, so the trio was as yet unaware that their time for planning was running out.

Freya made no comment on Jara and Piet's exchange.  Too engrossed in engineering to pay very much attention to the implications of the words (much of the technical code-base was woefully unoptimized), she filed them for later analysis.

Kapitein Piet nodded somberly.

"Then it's as I feared, and the Dark Lord knows I'm still alive, and he'll be coming. Freya - we don't have much time. I recommend getting ready immediately, but keep making improvements to the ruse until the time comes. Since I know the most about both the Hounds and our foe, I can do the talking, with the help of your voice synthesis. Jara - you've come up with some brilliant ideas already; now is the time to let us know if you have something else brewing. Freya - is there anything else I can do to help prepare? Otherwise, I could use some schematics on your layout."

Talking to a living space station still felt strange to him, despite the tense circumstances. Weird phrases and odd things to say kept coming up. It seemed to keep Kapitein a little amused - very valuable at this point in time. Kapitein Piet's nerves were taut as a bow string.

Any more ideas? She'd scraped her reserve dry just giving them that much. She shook her head. Her place now was to hyperspace away and come back with an engineer for the hyperdrive, and maybe some supplies, mostly hoping she didn't return to a whole lot of debris.

She stood up, "if he's definitely coming I'll go warm Belladonna up." And began to make her unaccustomed to normal gravity choppy stepped gait toward the airlock which housed Belladonna, she had the odd feeling that she should be hurrying...

She got her hair inside the suit and sealed up on the way.

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Freya spoke in her robotic voice, "[Fortunate] that I have been busy while you have been speaking.  The panels that [appear] to hide missile bays are being [printed]. The [faux] ion turrets are being constructed."

She was actually surprised at how versatile her manufacturing capabilities were.  Years of cruising empty space with nothing to do but optimize her few assets had transformed them into a hyper-efficient powerhouse.  Too bad her software skills were nowhere up to par with her factory planning.

Kapitein Piet's casual request for schematics was a little off-putting.  It was kind of like being asked for a nude photo.  Unfortunately, he had a point - he needed to know what she had to work with if he were to be at all convincing.  Perhaps it would be enough to give an abstract description rather than an actual picture.

The datapad blipped and rapidly scrolled through reams of diagrams and data.  In the end, it showed an interactive sketch of Freya that would let Piet get a rough idea of how she was laid out and what she was capable of.

Freya also addressed Jara as she walked through the hallway. "Here, I am returning half of your funds to you. May they speed your return."

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

Kapitein Piet started studying the datapad and simultaneously tried to remember as much about the Hounds of Slaughter as he could. He was pleased to see that the datapad clearly showed the full target schematics for the fake weaponry and equipment, as well as the current status. Despite the sporadic nature of Freya's interpersonal skills, her user-interface skills were definitely not lacking.

Unfortunately, his preparations were cut short, when...

(Take it away, Freya! Unless... what's Jara been up to after getting in her craft?)

RE: Space Station F.R.E.Y.A.

From across a gulf in space that could have contained a small star system, Freya felt a stirring in one of the gauge fields.  Specifically, it felt as if a thousand million pebbles were all tossed into an electric pond, each causing an electromagnetic ripple and a chaotic hierarchy of quantum splashes.

Actuators rapidly swiveled Freya's main sensor array to face the phenomenon. Seconds later, there could be no doubt as to its nature. Somewhere from deeply embedded routines, an old call-back bubbled up to the speech center.  "Warning! A huge battleship Krakatau is approaching fast!"

Seeing that time was running out, Freya halted all new development efforts to concentrate on communication and finishing construction.

"Actually, not so fast.  He is a full 16 light-minutes away and probably does not see us.  It will be some time before he can resolve anything more than the Calamitous' debris cloud and my ion trail.  The ball is in our court, what do we do with it?"

(please pardon my lack of self-control regarding the terrible joke in this post)
