A reunion!

It was a brisk autumn morning. Jake had recently woken up and was a bit groggy as he drank his morning coffee. He made his way to the front desk of his newly rebuilt inn. He took a seat in the same, old and worn wooden chair and propped his feet onto the counter with a yawn.

He grabbed the remote to the small TV which graced the corner of his desk and flipped on the TV. He flipped between channels for a seemingly endless amount of time before stopping on the local news.

A good ten to fifteen minutes pass and Jake began to nod off during the weather. Suddenly his cell phone began to ring. It was an unknown number so he hit ignore. Again the same number rang, and again he hit ignore. A third time even, the same number called. With a load groan Jake answered the call.

Jake: ..Hello?
Jones: Jake, it's Jones. It's an emergency.
Jake: Jones? Jones who?

Jake pulled his feet off the desk and idly rubbed his chin with his free hand. It had been several years since he had done much of anything of significance.

Jones: ..You have my ship.
Jake: OH! Jones!

Jake busted into a slight laughter as surprised showed in his tone of voice.

Jake: How ya been man!? Long time no talk!

Jones facepalmed.

Jones: Jake, please..This is no time for small talk. Look, I need you to get Chris and John. It's an emergency. I got into some real trouble and I don't know what to do here.
Jake: ..What did you get yourself into, Jones?
Jones: I'll explain later, please hurry.

Jones gave Jake information and a time on where to meet him and promptly hung up. Jake looked down at his beer belly then thought for a moment with a sigh. He grabbed his phone and skimmed through his contacts list to find John's number and give him a ring.

RE: A reunion!

John Gibson and Megan Kirate sat on the same old Coca-Cola red-and-white striped couch in John's house in Zanardio, Dankton, Meeriad.

This story begins, as these things usually do, with a ring of a phone.

It was the house phone... the one that literally hadn't rang in two years. There was no caller ID, and being so treated by technology, John was hesitant. He  gave Megan a glance, then looked back at the phone. It rang again. He picked it up.

John: John Gibson.

He listens for a moment. Megan watches him intently, waiting for some clue to the identity of the caller. A huge grin grows on John's face.

John: Jake Conner!

Megan leans in to the phone.

Megan: Jake!
John: That's... that's Megan. What's going on, man?

Jake illustrates for John the situation: Jones Laggut is in trouble and wants their help. There is no more information on the situation.

John: Well, alright. You picking us up here or do we need to book a flight? I assume you've been keeping the Sky Wolf in tip-top shape. Speaking of which, you talk to Jango lately? I haven't seen him since his wedding.

RE: A reunion!

Just about out of gas and definitely out of money, Tom Fender just rolled into the very same town in which John and Megan live. His Jeep Wrangler had obviously seen better days. The shine was gone from years of traveling the world, rust formed from the oceans he had crossed—by ferry of course. That isn't to say he hadn't thought about just driving across.

Anyway, he pulled into the driveway of John's house just as the engine stalled for no good reason. He hopped out and brushed the dust off his desert camo pants. He wore a black t-shirt, a USP on his hip, and he looked unshaven.

He stepped up to the front door and straightened out his shirt and pants.

RE: A reunion!

Off the phone with Jones now, Jake folded up the address and time and shoved the paper into a back pocket. He had adrenaline rushing through his body- he hasn't felt this way in ages. An adventure! Action! Finally! He quickly headed to the front door and flipped the lock over and shut the neon "OPEN" sign off just as two potential customers were walking up. Jake shot them a thumbs up and a wink and ran off into his cellar.

Down in the dank cellar lit only by a single window, Jake scoured around for the light switch and flipped it on. The old bulb gave off a very dim light as Jake looked around the cobweb-filled cellar. The back wall of the cellar was lined with gun racks. Firearms of all sorts graced each one. To the right wall was a desk set up for gunsmithing as well as reloading ammunition. And to the left were several gun safes to house the rest of Jake's extensive collection.

Jake popped open his gun safes, a smirk about his face. He threw on his shoulder holster and pulled out both of his M1911's. He secured a full magazine in each and holstered them. Next he made his way to the back wall where he retrieved his G36C. He did the same- locking in a magazine and then slinging the weapon over his shoulder.

On his way out of the cellar he nabbed the keys to the Sky Wolf off of an old nail which was driven into the wall. Next to that was his tactical vest. He threw that overtop his shoulder holsters and filled it with several extra magazines before flipping off the light and locking the place up.

Now outside, Jake hopped on his newly restored motorcycle and headed down the road to the airstrip where he stored the Sky Wolf. He parked just outside the hangar of the quiet airstrip. He slid a key into the door and there was an audible click as the lock opened. The hangar was pitch black inside, the only light was that which creeped in through the crevices of the large hangar door. Directly to his left was the small control box for the hangar door, and like a child of Christmas day, his face lit up as he smashed that "<->" button.

The heavy hangar doors creaked and howled as they slowly opened. With each passing moment, more and more light flooded into the hangar as the old Sky Wolf came into view. With the doors fully open now, Jake made his way over to the Sky Wolf, running a hand along it's landing gear, followed by a gentle pat.

Jake: I missed ya, old girl.

He flipped a small switch on a remote which resembled a car-door remote and the entrance to the Sky Wolf began to open as the hatch lowered. Jake quickly climbed up the steps and the hatch closed behind him. Making his way now into the cockpit he sat down and slid the key into the ignition. He turned the key and began to flip on all the primary systems as the old ship struggled to hum to life.

He balled up his fist and sent a firm strike to the center console and the Sky Wolf flared to life, it's engines howling as he applied some throttle. Jake was grinning like an idiot as he prepared to head off to pay John and Megan a visit.

RE: A reunion!

John headed upstairs and into the master bedroom. Over the past couple of years, he had been working on converting what used to be Chris's bedroom into a hidden gun vault. Hiding it had no practical use, he just wanted to have a secret room behind a bookshelf.

While the facade was still unfinished, the vault itself was complete; steel-reinforced concrete walls, with a ventilation and dehumidifier system separate from the rest of the house's air conditioning.

Behind the large, but empty bookshelf in the bedroom, which currently sat awkwardly on a set of plastic caster wheels, was a green, steel vault door that was never locked. Swinging the heavy door aside, he stepped inside and flipped on the fluorescent lights.

Inside was like a scene out of a movie: rifles lining every wall; pistols lining every shelf; glass display cases full of magazines of all types as well as sound suppressors. A dozen duffle bags full of other accessories and countless ammo cans were stuffed under the unfinished benches made of plywood and two-by-fours.

Considering he already had his Beretta Cougar M8045 in a leather hip holster, he didn't need to select a pistol. He spotted his old M10 sitting in its cumbersome drop leg holster. Neither the gun nor the holster were practical, but since it had been a couple years, he felt like he should go back to the old standby.

His gaze drifted to the .50 caliber Desert Eagle in the display case, staring at it for a moment, before just shaking his head and strapping on the M10.

Unsure of exactly what he would be needing, he picked his FN P90 and SCAR-L off of their wall racks.

As he headed downstairs to the door, loaded with slung firearms and duffle bags, he pulled out his cell phone and called Chris.

John: Hey, Chris. It'll take Jake a couple of hours to fly here, you up for some practical shooting drills?
Chris: Wouldn't you know it, I'm setting up the range now.
John: You are the man. See you in a bit.

Simultaneously, he pocketed the phone and opened the front door, only to be greeted by the sight of Tom Fender standing awkwardly close to the door.

John: Tom, you've got a lot of nerve showing your face around here.

Tom stood with a confused stare on his face, playing along with the apparent Star Wars reference.

John: Come here, you old pirate.

John gave Tom a hug.

John: You're just in time. We're headed over to Chris's ranch for a little trigger time before Jake gets here. We've got a job to do.

RE: A reunion!

High above the ground the Sky Wolf purred like a kitten as she weaved in and out of cloud formations. Jake was beaming with joy as this was something he hadn't done in a few years. Every so often he would note the gauges jumping back and forth- the ship obviously needed some tuning.

Cruising at his current speed his arrival would take a couple of hours at the least. Jake's gaze slowly drifted over to this afterburner. He licked his lips and contemplated to himself. He knew that it was more than likely the afterburners weren't going to work- but that small chance that they would! He idly rubbed his finger along the switchpanel for the afterburners, his finger lightly touching the dim, clear-green switch.

A grin crawled along Jake's face as he flipped the switch into the upright position. A green LED flared to life within the switch and there was a moments pause where nothing happen. Jake's grin slowly faded away when the ship suddenly jerked for a moment then the afterburners began to howl as the ship rocketed off towards John and Megan.

RE: A reunion!

By conventional roads, it was a good forty-five minute drive to Chris's ranch near Hirma, but over the years, John and Tom had quite literally cut their own trail and could make it in thirty.

As they pulled up, they saw Chris, in his usual blue T-shirt, bandana, and blue jeans, earmuffs squeezing the top of his head, standing among the shooting benches. Cases and cases of guns sat out.

They still shot often, but not quite the training they used to. As sad as they were to see it go, Chris had converted the old killhouse into a stable, so they'd have to make due with the range.

John turned off the Jeep's engine and climbed out. As he walked toward him, he noticed Chris, with a twinkle in his eye, was edging toward a large, heavy canvas bag. As he got closer, John recognized it, and nodded knowingly.

Chris, with a growing grin, pulled the bag open, exposing his Barrett M82A1. He hadn't shot it in a year and a half. "I want to shoot the Barrett, but ammo's just too expensive, daggummit." he would say.

John: It's funny how much we're getting into this. You'd think we're old and fat and haven't worked in twenty years.
Chris: I know. Tell everybody to get their ears on, because I can't wait any longer to shoot this bad boy.

----

It was only an hour and half, give or take a few minutes, before the Sky Wolf roared over head, slowing to a hover in a nearby pasture, and lowering carefully to the ground. They could hear motors clanking and groaning as the landing gear extended.

Chris, John, Megan, and Tom trudged through the tall grass toward the Sky Wolf as the hatch opened and the ramp extended, revealing Jake standing inside.

John: Jake! You old pirate!
Tom: Didn't you already do that?

RE: A reunion!

There were enough hugs and handshakes to go around as the old group had its first true "Reunion" of sorts in a long time. After they had all settled down, John broke the silence by pointing at Jake's gut.

John: Put on a few pounds there, Jake?

Jake looked down at his protruding belly, then gave John a leer.

Jake: It's muscle.

John couldn't help but bust into laughter- as did the rest of. the crew. Tom seemed rather anxious to get to work as he was the first to blurt out anything about the call from Jones.

Tom: So where are we going? ..When are we going, even?
Jake: Mesania. We're leaving tonight around 9:00 or so

Knowing they all had several hours to kill, the group made their way to the makeshift firing range and began to fire off some rounds. Pretty much the entire SG&C crew was nowhere near as good of a shot as they had used to be. Suddenly everyone was startled when Tom seemingly out-of-nowhere shouted at the top of his lungs.

Tom: MOZAMBIQUUUUEEEE! DRIIILLLL!

The shout was followed by three loud gunshots in succession of one another. The fresh target had two holes in the chest and one in the head. Tom grinned like an idiot.

RE: A reunion!

John and Chris joined in with a cry of "MOZAMBIQUE DRILL!" and began tearing up the paper silhouette target at 10 yards.

They spent the next three hours practicing like old times. Run-and-gun; transitions; clearing jams; weak hand shooting; long-range, iron sights; long-range, scoped; everything. John was happy to find that he was still up to working capacity.

After loading the equipment into the Sky Wolf for later, they retired to Chris's cabin, where they had a good ol' time and Chris grilled some steaks, and... by golly, they actually tasted good. Jake, however, took care of the corn-on-the-cob and mashed potatoes.

Chris: Jake, remember that time we were fighting all those zombies?
Jake: Yeah, that was awesome.
Chris: Remember... acid bullets?

RE: A reunion!

Jake stared at Chris for a moment as he loaded the mashed potatoes into a large bowl.

Jake: ..Don't judge me. They worked.
Chris: They worked, but I hear your Desert Eagle doesn't fire anymore.

Jake eyed Chris for a few more long moments as he now piled the steaming fresh corn onto a plate beside the potatoes.

John, Megan, and Tom were all sprawled about different areas of living room flipping through various channels on the television. As they all got into an idle conversation they stopped on the news. Amidst their idle banter, John overheard the anchorman say "Now with the news at nine.." and snapped to a realization.

John: Oh man!

John facepalmed as the rest peered over at him.

John: It's nine! We're supposed to leave!
Tom: ..But I'm hungry.

From the other room, Chris' voice echoed out as he and Jake were groaning and piling the food into bags.

Chris: We'll eat on the way!
