The Chronicles of Phillip Strong The boat engine makes a bad sputtering sound. Phillip's facial expression takes a turn for the grim. His brow burrows and his mouth moves to the side in concession. Phillip isn't that bad of a swimmer. He could probably make it to one of those water-level vacation points if there wasn't an enormous sea monster about five hundred yards to his rear--as his boat engine dies. He holds the grenade close to his body and closes his eyes. The grenade isn't armed, but at least he can make a joke before he, his boat, and his favorite blanket are eaten. Knowing he'll regret it, he turns around and climbs to the back of the boat. He now sees two enormous silhouettes underwater. One of them becomes two and a region of water becomes red. He makes a face reminiscent of the capital letter D followed by a colon. He grabs the disembodied leg from the floor and begins paddling toward Larion. Oh crud. The disembodied leg. Man, where did that thing come from, anyway? He lifts his favorite blanket. ...That's pretty nasty, man. He drops the blanket and turns away quickly, fighting back the urge to wretch. He tosses the leg back onto the floor and climbs into the front seat, wide eyed. He stares straight ahead. That's when the smell hits him. Phillip: UGGHH--MAN!! He presses his forearm deliberately against his nostrils and digs around the junk piled on the seat to his right. Score! A can of orange soda. He pops it open, takes a swig, slumps back, smiles, and watches the sea.
